De Grolsch Veste breathes football joy again, and rightly so. Our Tukkers are having a season to be proud of, with attacking football and impressive resilience. However, as critical supporters, we also see that recent matches, even the won ones, were not always played with the same conviction and dominance as earlier in the season. It's time for a tactical deep-dive to dot the i's and cross the t's.

Where is the pinch? In recent weeks, the balance between our attacking prowess and defensive stability has sometimes shifted. The high-intensity pressing, a trademark of this FC Twente side, sometimes leads to unintended open spaces in midfield. When the first line of pressure is bypassed, our defenders too often find themselves in one-on-one situations, or are forced to step out, creating gaps in the backline. This lack of compactness, especially during quick transitions by the opponent, is a risk factor we can minimize.

Another observation concerns the build-up from the back. Although we have a lot of possession, we sometimes lack the speed and verticality to truly hurt the opponent. The ball sometimes goes too wide or backwards, giving the opponent the opportunity to regroup and neutralize our attacking efforts. We need to become more dangerous in transition, with quicker decisions and more direct passes to our forwards.

What tweaks can we make? First, the organization in midfield. It might be beneficial to give the 'number six' – for example, Pröpper or Sadílek – a clearer defensive anchoring role when possession is lost, allowing the 'number eights' (Kjolo, Regeer) more freedom to push forward, but also to track back quicker. This creates a more robust block in front of the defense and reduces vulnerability during transitions. A more measured and coordinated press is essential; not every ball needs to be immediately chased high up the pitch. Sometimes, a compact mid-block is more effective.

Second point: the role of the fullbacks and wingers. We often see our fullbacks pushing high up, which is desirable, but cover on the flanks needs to be better guaranteed. A winger who shows discipline in dropping back when possession is lost can make all the difference, or a midfielder who drops wide to fill the space. Offensively, we must dare to look for depth more often, especially when players like Rots or Ugalde / Van Wolfswinkel are in promising positions. Quicker combinations and less unnecessary possession in the defensive third can lead to more clear-cut chances.

These are not fundamental problems, but rather subtle frictions that can be ironed out with targeted adjustments. By restoring balance, making the pressing smarter, and streamlining the attacking build-up, FC Twente can take the next step and make De Grolsch Veste vibrate with joy even more often. The potential is there; let's fully utilize it.
