FC Twente is considering the exit of Arno Verschueren after he was left out of the squad for the friendly against Aberdeen FC. Coach John van den Brom made it clear that the Belgian midfielder has no future in Enschede. "I know what Arno can do and what he brings; I don't know that about Harrie yet," Van den Brom told TC Tubantia.
Why is Verschueren being pushed out now?
The coach gave the chance to talent Harrie Kuster, while Verschueren, Issam El Maach, Gijs Besselink and Naci Ünüvar stayed on the training fields. At the number ten position FC Twente also faces heavy competition from Kristian Hlynsson, Kuster, Younes Taha and possibly Sam Lammers. This pressure makes it difficult for the Belgian to secure a regular spot. Verschueren arrived in the winter of 2025 from Sparta Rotterdam, but failed to score in 25 Eredivisie matches. He provided two assists and remains under contract until mid‑2027.
How does this fit the club's current standing?
FC Twente currently sits 4th in the Eredivisie with 58 points, 15 wins, 13 draws and 6 losses. The team has scored 59 goals and conceded 40 this season, giving a positive goal difference of +19. Yet the club is 26 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven, making every transfer decision critical. Verschueren's departure could free up space for younger players to boost the title chase.
Who are the possible replacements?
Besides Kuster and Hlynsson, the technical staff also looks at Sam Lammers as an alternative creative option. Additionally, FC Twente has several players slated to leave this summer, including Bas Kuipers, Alec van Hoorenbeeck, Gijs Besselink and Sayfallah Ltaief. These names are on the exit list, offering the club a chance to refresh the squad.
What does this mean for Verschueren's future?
With a contract until mid‑2027, Verschueren technically remains an FC Twente player, but his chances of playing time are slim. A move to another club could give him the much‑needed minutes. His agent will likely look for a team where he can start immediately, possibly in another European league. For FC Twente, this could mean a financial gain and more room for emerging talent.
FC Twente continues to focus on the title race despite the gap to PSV. Verschueren's exit may signal the club's intent to optimise the squad to win the remaining matches.
