FC Twente achieved a convincing win over Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday. The Tukkers won 3-0, thanks in part to two goals from Sem Steijn.
What happened?
The match in the Grolsch Veste was a special one for childhood friends Joseph Oosting and René Hake, now facing each other as coaches in the Overijsselse derby.
FC Twente started strong and scored in the twelfth minute. Daan Rots successfully disrupted Go Ahead's attack, allowing right-back Joshua Brenet to gain possession. He then provided Sem Steijn with a perfect pass, and the attacking midfielder powerfully shot the ball past Eagles goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange with his right foot.
How did the rest of the match unfold?
Steijn had regained his scoring touch. In the 36th minute, he scored his second goal of the match. Left-back Gijs Smal provided the assist from the left, and this time Steijn beautifully shot the ball in with his left foot.
Go Ahead, without a win in five matches, offered little resistance in the first half. The surprise team of this season in the Eredivisie created hardly any chances, and even after the break, Hake's team continued to struggle.
What are the consequences of the win?
The 3-0 victory ensures that FC Twente remains firmly in third place. Go Ahead now feels the pressure from NEC and FC Utrecht, who have one and two points fewer, respectively.
